The Art of Brewing: 5 Tips for the Perfect Cup at Home

There's a reason your favorite cafe's coffee tastes different from what you make at home, and it's not just the machine. Great coffee comes down to a handful of details that are easy to get right once you know them.

  1. Start with fresh, whole beans. Ground coffee loses its aroma fast. Grinding just before brewing preserves the oils and flavors that make a cup memorable.

2. Get your ratio right. A good starting point is 1:16, one gram of coffee for every sixteen grams of water. Adjust from there to match your taste.

3. Mind your water temperature. Water that's too hot (above 96C) can scald the grounds and pull out bitterness. Aim for 90-96C.

4. Match your grind to your method. A French press needs a coarse grind; an espresso machine needs a fine one. Using the wrong grind size is one of the most common brewing mistakes.

5. Never skip the bloom. Pour a small amount of water over your grounds first and let them sit for 30 seconds before continuing. This releases trapped CO2 and lets the coffee extract evenly.

At KOFFIVA, every bean we source is chosen with these details in mind, because a great cup starts long before it reaches your cup.
